The school is an international collaboration aimed at advancing ocean science in West Africa and connecting the world to West African scientists.

OMI Lab Workshops

Ocean Margins Initiative team

In November 2025, the newly constructed Ocean Margins Initiative (OMI) lab at the University of Ghana hosted an eDNA training workshop that brought together participants from North Africa, West Africa , and adjacent island nations. The training was co-organized by the UNESCO Ocean Decade Capacity Development Facility, the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission for Africa and Adjacent Island States, OceanTeacher Global Academy, the University of Ghana, and the Ocean Margins Initiative. The new lab space and equipment supported hands-on, practical training in eDNA collection and processing for burgeoning African scientists, helping to empower a generation that will lead the future of marine biodiversity monitoring on the continent.
