Modeling

Biogeochemical state estimate of the Gulf of Guinea

Angela M. Kuhn, Matthew Mazloff, Ariane Verdy, Sarah Gille

This project will develop a high-resolution, data-assimilative, physical-biogeochemical model of the Gulf of Guinea. The model will be constrained / validated using observations from the OMI monitoring campaign. We will use the model to investigate cross-shelf carbon, heat and nutrient fluxes in the Ghana shelf.

Figure showing Gulf of Guinea biogeochemical MITgcm – BLING model domain and diagram of ocean currents in the region, showing bathymetry from GEBCO_2025 (General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans) in the area.

The videos show daily surface NO3 (map) and vertical NO3 concentrations at a transect at 0º, simulated by a low resolution MITgcm - BLING model application in the larger domain, starting in January 2024. The research team is currently moving to a more focused, higher resolution (2km) domain.
